What Brokers Want to Hear from Resources Companies
Brokers are usually the first line of belief—and the first line of defence—for emerging resources companies. You’re on the phone with instos, building lists, and trying to explain (in 20 seconds) why a stock is worth backing.
But let’s be honest: most companies make your job harder than it needs to be.
At NarratIR, we work across the table from dozens of brokers—on everything from investor decks and ASX announcements to capital raise strategy and story positioning. And here’s what we hear time and time again:
1. “Just tell me where they’re at—without the geology lesson.”
Brokers don’t want to decode 12 pages of technical data to figure out what’s going on. They want milestone clarity. Where is the project today, what’s just happened, and what’s the next catalyst?
Good companies:
Use project roadmaps and Gantt charts.
Outline clear “funding-to-milestone” language.
Say things like: “We’re raising $5M to get to PFS and trigger our offtake option.”
What you can say to your book: “This raise gets them to first production by Q3 next year—DFS is already underway.”
2. “If I have to say ‘world-class’ one more time…”
Every presentation says “world-class.” But brokers know investors don’t buy adjectives—they buy differentiation.
What makes this asset special? Is it grade? Scale? Location? ESG profile? Strategic partner?
Strong IR:
Builds the why now narrative.
Anchors to macro trends like critical minerals security, Chinese supply risk, or decarbonisation timelines.
Names names—“Partnership discussions underway with Tier 1 global offtaker” is 100x better than vague ambition.
What you want to say on the call: “They’ve got a rare earths project in Malawi—high NdPr, no radioactive waste, Rio is circling.”
3. “They say they’re funded—but funded to where?”
Every deck says “well capitalised,” but few explain what that actually means.
Smart companies:
Quantify their current cash runway (“$4.2M on hand, takes us through Q1 2026”).
Show use of funds tied to value milestones.
Back it up with names (“Backed by Melt Ventures and high-net-worths with mining pedigree”).
Your message to instos: “They’ve got $1.2M committed from cornerstone investors. This round is to scale processing and hit first revenue next year.”
